Right now, Michigan’s lawmakers are considering Senate Bills 152-153 and House Bills 4464-4465—bipartisan legislation opening Michigan to community solar and all the amazing benefits it provides.

With community solar, you don’t need property with access to adequate sunshine. You don’t need the upfront funds to cover the cost of installing an expensive solar system on your roof. In fact, you don’t even need to own your roof. Instead, with community solar, ratepayers are provided with the opportunity to help meet their energy needs with locally produced renewable energy through a subscription to a local solar project and a credit on their monthly electric bill.   

SBs 152-153 and HBs 4464-4465 cut the red tape that prevents community solar projects from being built and utilized in Michigan, and the time to pass this bill package is NOW.

As part of the Inflation Reduction Act, the federal government now has $7 billion dollars in funding to support the development of community solar projects around the country. But the clock is ticking if Michigan hopes to be awarded any of that grant funding.

Federal funding would immediately help kick-start community solar projects around the state, bringing good-paying local jobs, new economic opportunities, and ultimately, energy bill savings to individuals and businesses throughout Michigan, but only if our legislature acts fast. 

Michigan can’t afford to be left behind on the community solar boom taking place across the Midwest, and passing legislation to allow these projects is the first step.
